Winter Recipe – Warm Stewed Fruits

27 May Winter Recipe – Warm Stewed Fruits

Winter is officially upon us and so are the shorter days and colder weather. Unfortunately, the colder weather brings about an increased risk of developing colds and flus, meaning protecting our immune system becomes more important than ever.

One way to reduce our risk of becoming sick is to increase our intake of foods containing immunity boosting properties. A great example is to increase our fruit intake. Fruits contain a wide range of antioxidants such as Vitamin C, which helps support the body’s immune system.

As an antioxidant, Vitamin C fights free radicals which can prevent or delay the onset of various diseases, such as colds or flus. Consuming extra antioxidants will not prevent you from getting sick, it will however, significantly decrease the severity and length of the cold.

Add some fruit to your diet this winter with these delicious stewed fruits!

This recipe is the perfect winter dish as it not only provides your body with essential immune boosting properties but will keep you warm and full on those chilly winter days.

Warm Stewed Fruits

Serves 5

Ingredients:

  • 1 red apple
  • 1 pear
  • 1/2 cup whole dried apricots
  • 1/2 cup dried cherries
  • 1 cup water
  • 2 tbsp. pure maple syrup
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/8 tsp nutmeg
  • Lemon juice, to taste

Method:

  1. Core and thinly slice the apples and pears.
  2. Add all ingredients into a pot over medium heat and bring to a simmer.
  3. Once simmering, reduce heat to medium-low and simmer for a further 18-20 minutes, or until the apples and pears are soft, and the liquid has reduced slightly.
  4. Serve however you desire! Some of my favourites are warm on top of porridge or pancakes for a delicious breakfast, on top of ice cream for a sweet dessert, or on top of yoghurt for a tasty afternoon snack.
  5. Enjoy!

Can be stored in the fridge for up to a week in an airtight container.
