Neck pain is very common and can affect your life and activities in many ways. It may be sharp pain, dull ache, localised to your neck, or it could spread to your shoulders and arms or even cause you to experience a headache. Neck pain is generally of a musculoskeletal origin and rarely has a more serious cause.

There are many causes of neck pain and how these areas get injured or irritated. Some common causes include:
An initial assessment with a physiotherapist will help determine which structure/s is contributing to your pain as well as the causes. They will take a detailed history and assess your movement. This assessment will guide your treatment and management. In the early stages of neck pain the research suggests that a combination of hands-on physiotherapy treatment, exercise and education is the best management. For chronic neck pain (neck pain that has lasted more than 3 months) or recurring neck pain it is important that you keep moving and be guided on preventative strategies.
